"When the sacred within you recognizes the sacred that surrounds you everywhere, a deeper spiritual reality opens up in which all space becomes sacred space, all time becomes sacred time, and all acts become sacred acts." --Anna Franklin, The Hearth Witch's Compendium
I oftentimes confused Hearth Witchery with Kitchen Witchery and while some would consider themselves to be both, I realized that Hearth Witchery is so much more as it recognizes the magick (and spirituality) are woven into every part of your life--something our Pagan ancestors would've known to be true. It's a magick that focuses on the home and family as well as living close to the spirits of the land they live on. This is at least my understanding of it. As Anna Franklin says in her book The Hearth Witch's Compendium, "...the hearth witch sees the sacred within the physical, the magical in the mundane, and uses this knowledge to incorporate spiritual practices into everyday life.".
I can't help but laugh that this style (for lack of better word) of witchcraft came into my life at Cancer season! As someone who has become quite a homebody, preferring the quiet refuge it provides from the chaotic world, I realized it only makes sense. I think the part that stuck out at me the most was the fact that there is no separation of mundane and sacred, mundane and magickal. It's all interwoven--something I think we can readily forget in a world where the default belief is one of illusion and separation, where the spiritual happens in separate buildings, where we must carve out specific moments to be spiritual instead of the spiritual already surrounding everything we do.
"Magic is not a practice. It is a living, breathing web of energy that, with our permission, can encase our every action." --Dororthy Morrison, Everyday Magic
I believe it was in D.J. Conway's book Celtic Magic I first read that magick used to be an everyday part of our ancestors' lives as they didn't view the spiritual as separate from the mundane. As I began living as aligned to the seasons and nature as I could, delved deeper into Wicca and witchcraft, I could recognize this truth and it began to change how I viewed things. For example, when I cook meals, I always bless the food and thank the animal for its sacrifice. I use spices and seasonings for not just taste but their magickal properties. I cleanse my living spaces and work towards ensuring they are inviting, warm, and comforting. My magick is simple and extends to baking, cleaning, washing clothes, tending the home, working with the land around me, and taking care of my family.
Witchcraft is first and foremost a practice but I believe it also should be a lifestyle, especially if it's coupled with any sort of religious beliefs. As a Wiccan, this is exactly how I view it as it's not something I just do when the moon is in a certain phase or when a need arises. Its a part of my daily life. I don't have to get frustrated at not having time to do something spiritual or magickal as I'm already doing it. That doesn't mean I don't still spend time at my altar or in ritual, as I do, but it's more of the point of acknowledging that I'm already practicing my craft, partaking in my spiritual path, daily. I realize that I'm being sort of repetitive but it's difficult to accurately put into words exactly what it means to me. That's why I'm going to be sharing some spells and perspectives for the home the next couple of weeks as sometimes that is truly the only way to show someone what you're talking about.
"Our fore families saw the practice of magic as a lifestyle rather than an individual set of events. They wove its power into every fiber of their day and it lived within every breath they drew." --Dorothy Morrison, Everyday Magic
My blog posts for this will begin Friday with Laundry Magick but until then I wanted to share some old blog posts that I feel you may enjoy.
Spells do not have to be fancy, utilize loads of tools, or be full of steps in order to be powerful. These are very simple spells that only use items that you already have in the home! Read the post by either clicking the link above or click here.
This is frankly one of my favorite posts I've ever written, especially since I absolutely love baking bread! In this post, I look at the importance of bread within different religious traditions, different Deities associated with grain and bread, as well as a couple of ways to incorporate magick into your next baking! I find the kitchen the most important part of the household and with these 10 tips, I aimed to help us bring the spiritual and mundane together. They are simple as we don't need to overcomplicate things! In our day to day lives which have become chaotic and frantic, we can lose sight of how inspirational, magickal, and beautiful a meal can really be and the kitchen is the place of magick. You may have realized I'm a huge proponent of simple magick, though I believe there are times we need something more involved, and nothing is as simple as color magick. We think of color magick in terms of candles, crystals, clothing but what about what we eat? Fruits and vegetables come in a wide array of colors and while having their own magickal properties, can also be utilized for their color. Read the post by either clicking the link above or here.
Hearth Witchery is a beautiful combination of Kitchen Witchery, Green Witchcraft, and Folk Magick. It possesses a mindset that allows us to view everything through a magickal and spiritual lens--one that allows us to live our paths. We don't have to try to balance our craft or lives as they are interwoven together. Neither is actually separate, even if society would like to tell us otherwise.
Do you have any experience with Hearth Witchery? Comment below as I'd love to hear your experiences and thoughts as well. As I said, the beauty and sacredness of this often overlooked or underestimated type of witchery is hard for me describe but I think nurturing and tending the home have become even more important, especially this year.
Do you have any experiences with Hearth Witchery? If so, please comment below as I'd love to hear about them!
